So Your Milk Hasn’t “Come In” Yet — Now What? Part 5
Part 5: Weight Loss, Diapers, and the Bigger Picture
Some newborn weight loss after birth is common and expected. Many healthy babies lose up to 7–10% of birth weight before beginning to gain.
Because early weight changes can be influenced by fluids, birth interventions, and normal adjustment, diaper output and overall clinical picture are important pieces of the assessment.
Common benchmarks used by pediatric and lactation professionals include:
Increasing wet diapers over the first several days
Transition from meconium to lighter stools
Baby appearing alert, feeding actively, and settling after feeds
Weight matters — but it’s rarely the only thing that matters.
